Encased within the smooth, thin skin with exactly 18 plaits, is a delicately seasoned filling of minced Chinese ham, lean pork and ginger. Puncture the skin to allow the steaming hot soup to seep out before savouring the dumpling with a dack of black vinegar with a few slivers of fresh ginger.
(Extracted from http://www.dragon-i.com.my/)

I finally found a way of eating it properly after trying the xiao long bao for many times. I found it easier to hold the xiao long bao at its plaits using chopsticks and put it on a ceramic spoon. Then, give it a small bite and have a sip of the soup first. Next, have a taste of the meat filling together with the leftover soup. Yum yum~

The Custard Bun

The custard filling was very creamy. We love it very much. Mind you, the custard filling is hot when it's first served. However, it is best eaten hot, or at least warm. If you do not plan to eat it as soon as it is served, you could actually ask the waiter/waitress to serve it later.

The Seafood La Mien

The noodles and the soup tasted so so to me, but my mom said it was nice.

The Steamed Rice with Pork Chop

This was ok too. Although the size of the outlet is not big and the menu selection is rather limited, but I believe it is making good money to be able to withstand the operational costs.

The Story of Shihlin
Thousands of Taiwanese crowd the local night markets in search of their favourite and delicious snacks, and Taipei's Shihlin Night Market is the most famous due to its very wide range of local delicacies in its small streets and alleys. If a snack is nice, you can surely find it in Shihlin! The locals say, "If Taiwan has it, Shihlin has it". With Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks®, the Taiwanese and us alike can now do the same and enjoy the wonderful street snacks of Taiwan!!
(Extracted from http://www.shihlinsnacks.com.tw/MY/story-my.htm)

Being recommended by my house mate to this outlet, I finally went to pay it a visit when I saw this outlet in the directory listing of Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall.

As my ultimate aim is to try out the oyster vermicelli that my house mate recommended, I only tried out that exact snack. I admitted that the way it was presented to me was not what I have thought to be. I blamed it to the stereotype of a typical vermicelli soup. :P

It turned out that, this oyster vermicelli has a thick soup base, tasted a bit like slightly thickened shark-fin's soup with a tad of vinegar (maybe more than a tad, :P). It is ready-made, the 'chef' would just pour a big scoop (don't worry, it is really just a snack) of the vermicelli into a white plastic bowl, add some Chinese parsley, exactly two medium-sized oysters and some chicken-meat strips upon order. The taste was weird to me at the first nibble, but strangely it get better the next few. However, the texture of the vermicelli is quite smooth, maybe due to the fact that it is being kept warm in the pot over a long duration of time. Next visit? It is also popularly known as air batu campur in Malay or ABC for short. The word "air batu", literally meaning "stone water" means ice and "campur" means mixed. It is sweet-tasting and is primarily ice served with sweet flavoured syrup and jelly. The word Kacang is a Malay word for bean, and the word "ais" is a transliteration of the English term "ice".
(Extracted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_kacang)

The cendol which is quite similar to the Ice Kacang.

The menu and price listing (this was taken before fuel price hike)

The menu (before fuel price hike)

Famous places do have lots of these stuffs, don't them? :P

Newspaper cuttings again...

There are a lot of patrons here though it's already late afternoon and that there are no main dishes offered here (if Yong Tau Foo is more of a side-dish).

If you have been to Jonker Walk of Malacca and think that the ice kacang there suits your appetite, then I bet this absolutely will too!

Sufficient amount of dark-brownish syrup on the shaved ice, generous servings of condiments hidden in the snow, not enough to lure your appetite? What about a home-made ice-cream topping it? And having it on a hot stuffy day??!!!

Hop on to Bentong to this famous dessert restaurant, the Kow Po Restaurant.

Fear not the sin of high sugar intake because the sweetness is just enough (of its taste). To me, the syrup tasted like Gula Melaka (maybe it really is), the caramel taste-alike sugar.

Palm sugar or Gula Melaka was originally made from the sugary sap of the Palmyra palm or the date palm. Now it is also made from the sap of the sago and coconut palms and may be sold as "coconut sugar."
(Extracted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gula_melaka)

This ice kacang is best eaten when it has melted a little, when the shaved ice dissolved in the syrup. I don't really craze for ice kacang usually, but for this one, one ice kacang is just not enough. :P This is absolutely a perfect treat for a hot day.

At last, thank you HM for recommended and brought us to this restaurant. When's the next trip ar? :D

Extra Information and Reviews:
<a have enjoyed from a burger chain.
Quality : McD < Wendy's < Carl's Jr.
Price : McD < Wendy's OR Burger King < Carl's Jr.
Conclusion : Price = Quality!

(As the last time I went to Burger King should be some time ago, thus, no direct comparison of quality here.)

I tried the Jalapeno Chicken. The chicken patty is juicy, tender and fresh. Served generously with lettuces, olives slices (I think), it was ok as I don't really enjoy olives that much. Personally, I preferred Charbroiled Chicken Club burger and Charbroiled Santa Fe Chicken burger. Charbroiled Chicken Club burger has chicken bacons in it while the Santa Fe Chicken don't. Comparably, these two burgers tasted nicer than the Jalapeno. The breads are different, they are like the wholemeal bread rather than the normal white ones. The chicken patties wise, they are both juicy and tender. But, I noticed that if the size of a chicken burger is smaller, the bread used would be the wholemeal type. Ya, most likely the bread type earns my vote.

As part of the combo, there is a drink and Fries included. The fries are also very yummy. They are not the typical off-the-shelf thin version fries or the crinkle-cut fries. If you are observant enough (or perhaps you don't need to be observant to notice this), some of the fries still have the skin attached. However, they are soft, crunchy (not too crunchy as that would mean over-fried) and they are served hot!

And the beef burger comes in really hugeeeee size, but not so for some of the chicken burgers. Since I never tasted any beef burgers before, no comment on this.

Another credit to Carl's Jr. is the free flow of drinks and pickles. The drinks are not limited to soft drinks only. There are iced lemon tea and coffee as well. I would certainly want to visit Carl's Jr. again, despite the pricing which costs around RM 20 something for a combo set.

Other Reviews :
http://kyspeaks.com/2008/01/11/ky-eats-carls-jr-burger-screw-the-diet/
http://masak-masak.blogspot.com/2007/07/carls-jr-1-utama-shopping-centre-old.html
http://ipohwav3.wordpress.com/2007/08/21/carls-jr-1-utama-pj/

Branches (the ones I know) :
Sunway Pyramid
One Utama

Hainanese Chicken Rice, Serdang

There are two chicken rice restaurants/stalls in Serdang area which has attracted a lot of patrons frequenting them. I had blogged about one of them some time ago, now I would like to introduce the other one to you all. This is the Hainanese version instead.

Just like the roasted version, this chicken rice restaurant is also full of customers during lunch time, especially weekends. If you want to enjoy your meal, you are advised to go there earlier or later (with risk that the chicken might be sold out already).

Back to the chicken rice, the chicken meat is tender and fresh. It doesn't has the taste of 'chicky' smell in it, which is something I not so like about the roasted chicken. The rice itself I suspect is cooked with chicken stock which make it smell nice and taste nice too, not like the normal garlic rice which normally does not taste like what it smells like. Unlike the normal chicken rice restaurant, this restaurant actually serves you the ginger-garlic version of chilli. It is not really spicy, however, if you love ginger and garlic, you would love this. The specially-made sauce is the blend of chilli, garlic, ginger and some other ingredients that I don't remember or have failed to identify. Anyway, go try out yourself and let me know your opinions!

Address :
Jalan Kolej,
43300 Seri Kembangan, Selangor.
(From Jusco Equine Park, you will pass Public Bank, Wing Heong Restaurant, Mexim Dim Sum Restaurant, and a few shoplots. It is corner shoplot and is behind a bus stop.)

Location :
Wikimapia coordinate : 3°1'10"N 101°42'13"E

Operation Hours :
If not mistaken, it is closed on Tuesdays.
(Whoever knows the exact day, please share it with me, thanks!)

Other Reviews :
http://www.ubisoft.biz/dc/2006/05/hainanese-chicken-rice-at-seri.html

Pun Chun Duck Noodles (Bidor)

Thanks to Eric, we were brought to this restaurant when we were on our way back to our hometown. This restaurant, Pun Chun is famous of various Chinese Biscuits too, besides the duck noodles.

The herbal taste of the duck soup is quite strong, which we liked it very much. As for the noodles, it was the normal egg noodles, which I think tasted normal too. :P You can have your noodles dried or in the duck soup. I found the soup for the dried version is slightly stronger than the soup version. In addition to the herbal soup, you will also be served with either duck drumstick or meat together in the soup. There was some herbal taste in the meat, though the meat was not really juicy anymore due to long period of boiling, but it was still nice.

Other Reviews :
http://www.nst.com.my/Misc/goodbites/Article/20070305111218/pp_index_html
http://kyspeaks.com/2007/02/14/ky-eats-pun-chun-%E5%93%81%E7%8F%8D-restaurant-at-bidor/
http://kampungboycitygal.blogspot.com/2007/08/small-town-story-bidor.html
http://www.ourlilspace.com/?p=4

Address :
38 - 40, Jalan Besar, Bidor, 35500 Perak

Location :
Wikimapia Coordinates : 4°6'42"N 101°17'15"E

Operation Hours :
Opens from 5 am to 10 pm daily

Contact Number :
05-434 1554 /1562

Penang Chee Cheong Fun, Restaurant O & S

I have always preferred the Penang-styled chee cheong fun, compared to the curry chee cheong fun. However, it is pretty hard to find a chee cheong fun that is in Penang style in Selangor. Therefore, when I see this Penang chee cheong fun, I ordered it without hesitation.

It quite resembled the Penang's one with lots of shrimp paste, fried shallots and sesame seeds. However, there is a minor difference between the Penang's one and this one. The rice sheets for Penang's chee cheong fun are actually in rolls and you can ask to have them spreaded out. However, for the one from this stall, the rice sheets are actually in flat form already. Anyway, that is not important. The important thing is I get to eat Penang-styled chee cheong fun again, in Selangor.

Price :
RM 1.70 for small serving
RM 2.XX for big serving (Forgot the price already, :P)

Location :
Wikimapia Coordinates : 3°6'27"N 101°37'29"E

Other Reviews :
http://www.awhiffoflemongrass.com/?p=53
http://masak-masak.blogspot.com/2005/12/o-s-restaurant-petaling-jaya.html
http://food.malaysiamostwanted.com/food/Chee%20Cheong%20Fun

Nasi Lemak Ayam, Sea Park

The Indomie Mamak Stall

The yummy Nasi Lemak Ayam

It was purely coincidence that I noticed this stall. One day, judging by the number of persons there and majority of them were having nasi lemak ayam, I decided to pay it a visit.

There's a saying that whenever you go to some new places, look around, the restaurants or stalls with lots of customers, that would be nice choices. I take heed of this valuable piece of advice and it got me right! It was a brilliant choice that I have made. :P

The Ayam - the fried chicken
It was coated with some spices which I have no idea of, but the spices gave nice aroma and taste. The chicken meat is tender, juicy and yet it's not oily, surprisingly to me.

The Nasi - the rice
The rice is soft, though not very lemak (or is it the plain white rice ar? :P), but it is good enough.

The Sambal - the chilli paste
Sambal is a condiment used in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the southern Philippines and Sri Lanka, as well as the Netherlands and in Suriname , made from a variety of peppers, although chili peppers are the most common. Sambal is used as a condiment or as a side dish, and is sometimes substituted for fresh chilis; it can be very hot for the uninitiated. It is available at exotic food markets or gourmet departments in supermarkets in numerous countries.
(Extracted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambal)

The sambal is not very spicy and it has mild sweetness. However, the overall taste of the sambal, complements the rice very much.

The Fried Egg
The sunny-sided up egg is half-done. Thus, the egg yolk texture is still there. Normally, I would prefer well-done fried egg. However, this one just fits in my appetite where the combination of the egg yolk and the sambal is wonderful. And the fried egg brighten my day, a sunny day! By the way, it is only available for dinner. :P Maybe a "sunny" night instead.

With the perfect rice + the perfect sambal + the perfect egg + the perfect fried chicken, they make the prefect Nasi Lemak Ayam!

Price :
RM 2.50 for Nasi Lemak Biasa
RM 4.50 for Nasi Lemak Ayam
RM 0.00 for Additional Sambal

Food Options:
Besides the signature Nasi Lemak Ayam, there are also other food available, such as Roti John, Maggi Goreng, etc. You can ask for the "menu" which would be spoken to you in a fast way. :P

Operation Hours:
At night only.

Location:
Wikimapia Coordinates: 3°6'35"N 101°37'20"E

Other Reviews :
http://kyspeaks.com/category/eat/hawkers/
http://forum.fooxion.com/index.php?showtopic=1445

* For first-time visitors, you should really really try the fried chicken, it's superb!

New Cathay Restaurant, Penang

This is a place I used to take breakfast once a blue moon as I am not from the island. However, I make it a point to order the banana pancake with raisin there. First of all, this food is not easily available (except from some homes' kitchens). Second, it simply make a good breakfast for me.

I am not sure whether the chef put in any sugar or not, but the sweetness is just appropriate, maybe it's just the natural sweetness of banana. The pancake is added with banana slices and some raisins. The pancakes are cut into pieces and served with some sesames sprinkled on top.

There are many other food available in the restaurant. Though not bad, but most of them are somehow averagely tasted. Anyway, I do really hope they open up branches in somewhere nearby (in KL) so that I won't be too home-sicked with Penang food!

Chee Cheong Fun - the thick but not stinky gravy earns my vote.

A rice noodle roll (also translated as steamed rice roll) is a Cantonese dish from southern China and Hong Kong, commonly served as a variety of dim sum. It is a thin roll made from a wide strip of Shahe fen (rice noodles), filled with shrimp, pork, vegetables, or other ingredients. Sweet soy sauce is poured over the dish upon serving. A very similar dish is the Vietnamese bánh cuốn.
(Extracted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rice_noodle_roll)

Hokkien Mee - The soup doesn't have stinky smell but tasted average, as in no surprises to me.
(mind you, the "average" is in terms of what you can get in Penang and absolutely does not mean the "average" elsewhere.)

Hokkien hae mee (Hokkien/Fujian prawn noodles; 福建虾麺) is served in Penang (with a variant served in Singapore known as Hae mee). It is a dish of egg noodles and rice noodles in a fragrant stock, which is made from both fresh shrimp and dried prawns, as well as pork or chicken. Traditionally, small cubes of fried pork fat are added to the soup, but this is now less common due to health concerns. It is garnished with prawns, fish cake, leafy greens, pork ribs, squid, vegetables, crisp deep-fried shallots, spring onions and fresh lime. The dish is served with sliced red chili, light soy sauce and sambal.
(Extracted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hokkien_mee)

Jawa Mee - Just normal.

Jawa Mee is similar to the Mee rebus. We always refer that place to Wellesley Cinema Food Court as that place was previously the only cinema at the area, an old-fashioned one. Anyway, this place is besides Wellesley Restaurant, around one block before the Chai Leng Park morning market and a street before the Chai Leng Park's WaiSikKai (the whole street in Chai Leng Park which has lots of food stalls).

There is a good variety of choices there to fill your appetite with yummy food. There are Satay, Char Keow Teow, Keow Teow T'ng (Keow Teow Soup), Belacan Fried Rice, Grilled Fish, Tomyam Noodles, Western food, Curry Mee and many more.

This is a place I would recommend if there are a bunch of you longing for delicious and cheap Penang's hawker food. This is a place where you can have a huge variety of quality food under one roof. However, this place is only opened for dinner.

The food I wouldn't want to miss if I am there :

Grilled Fish

This is so far the best grilled fish that I have ever eaten. The fish is fresh and the meat is tender. The dipping sauce complements the dish perfectly, it is a little bit sour and a bit spicy, adding additional tastes to the already yummy grilled fish and of cause it's very appetizing.

Belacan Fried Rice

The fried rice above and the fried rice below are from the same stall. I don't really remember the name of the dish, but one of them would be the Belacan Fried Rice. The fried rice has mild saltness. However, the sambal is nice, it's not too spicy if you don't really favour spiciness.

Named "Belacan" in Malay, shrimp paste or shrimp sauce, is a common ingredient used in Southeast Asian and Southern Chinese cuisine.
(Extracted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrimp_paste)

Popiah

This popiah has generous servings of mengkuang, bean sprouts, chili sauce and other ingredients. To make it not so dry, this variation of popiah has a sweet, fresh soup poured over it before served. I think it is the soup from cooking the bangkuang, which also is the reason why it has mild sweetness.

Popiah (simplified Chinese: 薄饼; pinyin: bóbǐng or Chinese: 薄皮卷; pinyin: bópíjuǎn) is a Hokkien/Chaozhou-style fresh spring roll common in Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan. Thus, I make it a point to order this every time I am there. The kuew chap is soft and smooth. The kuew chap itself don't have much taste. However, eating together with the soup and perhaps chilli, the taste is marvelous. The soup is not salty, is not too watery but has very mild herbal taste (perhaps is the dark soya taste instead :P).

Kway chap (Chinese : 粿汁), Teochew dish of rice sheets in dark soya soup, served with pig offal, tofu derivatives and boiled eggs.
(Extracted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuisine_of_Malaysia#Chinese_food)

Oyster Omelette

As I don't really fancy oysters, thus I have no comments on the oyster. It's with light spicy with some pieces char siew served together. I still prefer Penang style of curry mee where it's not that lemak and with nice and fragrant chilli paste (sambal). Though Ipoh hor fun is nice, but I still think yellow noodles and rice vermicelli together are the best combination for curry mee. As for the dumplings, they tasted quite nice, crunchy and fresh.

Coconut milk is a sweet, milky white cooking base derived from the meat of a mature coconut. Besides, instead pieces of char siew, chicken are used and there are long beans and dry tofu. Anyhow, being able to export its curry paste to Hong Kong, of cause there is a certain quality that is offered. :D

Other Reviews :
http://shoppingmumsparadise.blogspot.com/2007/11/sun-seng-fatt-curry-mee.html
http://masak-masak.blogspot.com/2006/04/ipoh-curry-noodles-sun-seng-fatt.html
http://www.wretch.cc/blog/velisian&article_id=1895224 (Chinese)

Some information about Sun Seng Fatt's export:
http://www.franchise.com.hk/franchise_silver/ssf

Address :
Sun Seng Fatt Curry House
No. 28, Jalan SS2/10
Petaling Jaya. Oh, I would really love to have it again...

It's crispy. It has a mild, nice smell of pastry. It has soft curry potatoes fillings, and I saw from other reviews, there are pieces of chicken meat, but I don't remember there's some meat in it when I gulped down the puff. Besides, it also has a small piece of hard-boiled egg in it, which the egg seems a little over-cooked. Having the piece of egg in curry puff is usually not so normal in the ordinary "road-side stalls". However, I vaguely remember that when I was still small (yeah, lots of years back then), the curry puffs used to have pieces of egg with generous serving of chicken and potatoes fillings. But with the cost of living getting higher and higher (but not the salary), the size of curry puffs seems to shrink quite a lot. Errm, sorry, enough of the "long long time ago"... Lets get back to the tasty curry puffs from Ikea...

It costs RM 1 per curry puff or RM 5.50 for a half dozen of curry puffs. Mind you, this curry puff is best eaten when it's still hot/warm. If it is left to cool, it's not crispy anymore.

Other Reviews :
http://babeinthecitykl.blogspot.com/2007/02/review-curry-puffs-at-ikeas.html
http://foodie.parisbeaverbanks.com/2007/05/20/curry-puffs-from-ikea/
http://www.reviewstream.com/reviews/?p=9107

Address :
IKEA Malaysia
No. 2, Jalan PJU 7/2,
Mutlara Damansara,
47800 Petaling Jaya,
Selangor Darul Ehsan.

Business Hours :
10 am to 10 pm for Sun - Thurs
10 am to 11 pm for Fri, Sat and eve of public holidays

Restaurant O & S

As penangnites, we have been searching around for a long time for a nice bowl of prawn mee and laksa in Klang Valley. Finally, thanks to Eric again, we found one stall that offers prawn mee that best resembles and tastes like an authentic Penang prawn mee. It is located in O & S Restaurant, Paramount Garden.

The O & S Restaurant

The Prawn Mee Stall

The Yummy Prawn Mee

This prawn mee is certainly one of the best that could be found in Selangor. The soup is lightly spiced and with generous fried shallots complementing it. The soup doesn't give any scent of the prawn stink as distinct from the rest of the prawn mee that I have tasted in Selangor. Besides, the noodles and mee hoon (rice vermicelli ) are cooked to perfect that they are not over-cooked.

The Famous Assam Laksa

This restaurant is famous for its laksa as well and some other food. This variation of Assam laksa offers generous serving of fish chunks, which I don't exactly like. The soup is a little yellowish and sour, not too thick nor too watery. The noodles in the soup is quite smooth, but it's just the average noodles like what most of the stalls offered. Overall, this laksa could be quite a good deal for what could be found in Selangor. However, I still prefer the northern Assam laksa where the fish chunks are perfectly blended into the soup and making the soup taste a little sweeter. Besides, there are also crispy prawn crackers served together with the laksa. In addition, the self-made laksa noodles give more texture which complement the soup well.

I have noticed a lot of people ordering the Yong Tau Foo in the restaurant, perhaps the restaurant is also famous for that. There are a lot of other food stalls in the restaurant. I have tried the banana fritters there and it's quite good actually, though I still prefer Tun Sambanthan's one. It's crispy and the batter is not too thick. It is also made of the whole banana, not like the one could be found from the Malay stalls along the roadside, where only half side of the banana is used. But, of course, using the whole banana would mean the price is more expensive, much more.

Other reviews :
http://masak-masak.blogspot.com/2005/12/o-s-restaurant-petaling-jaya.html
http://kyspeaks.com/2006/09/21/ky-eats-petai-prawn-rice-at-o-s-restaurant-taman-paramount-pj/
http://www.flsam.blogspot.com/2007/06/fish-head-mee-hoon-o-s-restaurant.html
http://limmeiyen.blogspot.com/2006/12/dinner-o-s-restaurant-paramount-garden.html

Address :
O & S Restaurant
Jalan 20/14,
Paramount Garden,
Petaling Jaya.

Yut Kee Restaurant, Kuala Lumpur

Warning : This is a highly non-halal post!

Yut Kee Restaurant is a restaurant with nostalgic settings. It has the decorations like an old coffee shop but with modernized services (and the government tax). It's after the normal tea-break time and far to early from dinner time. However, there area still quite a lot of patrons there. Some ordered the "chops", some ordered the bread toast while some went all the way for the Swiss rolls.

As for us, we ordered the Pork Chop and Belacan Fried Rice. The pork chop is served fast, which I think is ready-made and just pour in the brown sauce and reheated a little upon order. However, the meat is quite tender while the brown sauce's thickness is just appropriate. It has a mild sweetness as well. There is a satisfying serving of the sauce which is a good thing for people like me who favours lots of gravy served together with the food. In ordinary chicken chops, etc, the western salads are served. But here, the potatoes, onions, green peas, corns and carrots are served instead. I do think that this combination is not bad, as the sauce can complement these side dishes well. As for the Belacan Fried Rice, the taste is average in my opinion. But the egg mixture in it is still soft and in small chunks which provides some additional textures to the dish. I would definitely order it again, if I would like to have rice the day I would be there again.

Actually, besides the pork chop and belacan fried rice, the recommended food are Roti Babi (I know the name is a little bit... But that's really the name of the dish!) and Kaya Swiss Roll. When we were there, it was 4 pm already and the Roti Babi had sold out. And then, after the pork chop and belacan fried rice, we were too full for the Kaya Swiss Roll. Thus, we would just leave them for next visits. For reviews of the famous Roti Babi, do check out the reviews below.

This restaurant has been a little bit commercialized and there is government tax included in the bill. However, the service there is quite good. When one of the waiter saw that I were to share the fried rice between the two of us, he offered to bring us the bowls and an additional pair of spoon and fork. That's so nice of him, having to be able to try to serve our needs automatically! I think he is a foreigner, and he speaks English, a Filipino perhaps?

Overall, this restaurant is worth at least one visit, for the pork chop (or any other chops, which I suppose would taste similar... :P), the Roti Babi and the Swiss Roll, although I don't have any comments on these two items yet.

The Menu

The Menu

The Restaurant

The Restaurant

The Pork Chop

The Belacan Fried Rice

Other Reviews :
http://wp.peachjon.com/edition_2004_06/2006/09/old-style-kopitiam-yut-kee.html
http://masak-masak.blogspot.com/2006/12/nostalgic-dining-yut-kee-jalan-dang.html
http://www.friedchillies.com/fc/more.php?id=1501_0_1_0
http://vsdgrain.wordpress.com/2006/07/09/food-post-yut-kee/
http://makankings.blogspot.com/2006/09/roti-babi-yut-kee.html

Address However, this Fuzhou meesuah doesn't have the strong ginger taste. In exchange, it has a nice Chinese wine smell and when you take a sip of the soup down your throat, you would immediately feel the warmth that the Chinese wine brought. The soup is red in colour due to the red rice wine. The meesuah' texture is pretty smooth and still in good form when served. For those who cook meesuah before, they would know that cooking meesuah is no easy task as if the time taken is too long, the meesuah would deform and sticking each other. I think the meesuah used is not the normal type that we could get from supermarket, as it is slightly thicker. As for the soup, the thickness of the soup is just nice, it is not too thick nor too watery. However, it does have pretty strong taste of liquor. The restaurant also offers generous serving of meat (I am not heavy meat-eater, :P) together with the meesuah.

Another specialty of the restaurant would be the Fuzhou fish balls. Fuzhou fish balls ain't ordinary fish balls as there are some meat fillings inside the fish balls. You could say that they are fish paste-coated meat balls too, if you like to. :P Personally, I am not too into fish balls and fish pastes. Thus, I don't have special comments about this. But the combination of meat and fish paste is pretty interesting and fresh to me, as it could soften the taste that the fish paste brought. :P

I strongly suggest those who are interested with the Fuzhou meesuah to dine-in as I once tried with huge eagerness to have a taste of it by asking my housemate to take-away and later re-heated at home. But, the soup become too salty to my liking. Anyway, this restaurant is still high recommended by me, and by fellow food bloggers too.

Other Reviews :
http://masak-masak.blogspot.com/2006/11/fuzhou-food-hup-yick-jalan-yew-pudu.html
http://eatingasia.typepad.com/eatingasia/2007/10/spend-a-bit-of-.html
http://cumidanciki.blogspot.com/2007/06/in-search-of-red-wine-mee-suah-hup-yik.html
http://www.waisikkai.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=429&Itemid=47
http://awhiffoflemongrass.blogspot.com/2007/01/hup-yick-restaurant-taste-of-foochow.html

Address :
Taste of Foochow
14, Jalan Gajah (off Jalan Yew),
Pudu, Kuala Lumpur.

Contact Number :
Tel. 03-9281-8788

Business Hours :
8:30 am - 5:00 pm

Chop 'n Steak (Serdang)

Thanks to someone, we finally found a Western food restaurant in nearby area which offers best value for money over the food provided. The Chop 'n Steak restaurant is a Malay restaurant, but selling western food (majority of the items from the menu). It is located somewhere near UPM in Sri Serdang.

The restaurant is pretty nicely decorated and the lightings of the restaurant somehow provide a jolly mood for dinner (The restaurant only opens for dinner). We have been there during weekdays and during weekends, the place is full of people! There are Malays, Chinese, Indians and even Iranians. However, luckily, we always got our seats.

When you order, you could see from the order that it is actually divided into a couple of sections. The restaurant is pretty organized that there are different people specializing in cooking different cuisines. Thus, the order could actually be separated between these "departments" and each "department" would prepare the food separately.

The Menu

The Menu

The Menu

The menu seems a little bit limited comparing to the Western food chains such as Chilli's or TGIF. However, having considered the size of the restaurant, I still think that it is highly acceptable, especially the price stated on the menu! You see, it's really hard to find a nice Fish 'n Chips with generous serving of Mayonnaise at only RM 6, plus an incredibly ice-blended fruit drink at only RM 2 (Some of the ice-blended drinks are at RM 2.50), the whole meal doesn't even exceed RM 10 for a decent Western meal! And yes, there is no "++" charges, you know what I meant, don't you? OMG! That's why I love you so, Chop 'n Steak!

Fish 'n Chips

Chicken Goldon Blue (Chicken Cordon Bleu)

Fresh Orange Juice

Ice-blended Mango Juice

Overall, this place is totally valued for money! If you opt for some average taste of Western food but having limited budget and living somewhere near Serdang, this would be the only place I would recommend for cheap Western cuisines. If you ask me to choose between F1 and Chop 'n Steak, I would not think twice and would head on to the latter.

Here are some other reviews of the restaurant :
http://reiko0607.blogspot.com/2007/11/chop-n-steak.html
http://nazri.flavert.com/2007/10/29/chop-steak-and-first-step-towards-world-domination/
http://hungwei.blogspot.com/2007/11/chop-steak.html (Chinese)

Address :
Chop 'n Steak
No. 379, Jalan 18/1,
Taman Sri Serdang,
43400 Serdang,
Selangor.

WikiMapia Coordinates :
3°0'21"N 101°42'55"E

Contact Number :
012-447 1639 / 019-335 7373

Jogoya, Starhill Gallery

Jogoya, Starhill Gallery is having a second anniversary promotion. However, to me, the arrangement of the setting seems a little bit unorganized. There have been mixed opinions regarding the buffet. In my humble opinion, the variety of food is huge and there are many special food served, such as the Alaskan crab, king prawn, etc. Some hits among the patrons are the Häagen-Dazs® Ice-cream and coconut (Yup, really, they were all grabbed in a few minutes). Oh ya, oysters need to be ordered too, as in the cook only pass a pair of oysters to you upon ordering at the counter (you would get it immediately though).

But, the tastes of these food are somehow average or below average. With the price at near RM 90 for the supper buffet, I was expecting more. To my dismay, my views stand with those who have negative opinions about Jogoya buffet. Though my reviews might sound discouraging, I still think that if you haven't been to this restaurant before, it is good to try it out, at least for the variety of food that you could enjoy there, especially when there is promotion now.

Some tips for the buffet:
* Please make sure you do your booking before you go especially when there are promotions as the crowd can be very overwhelming.
* Booking are easier to make in the morning than other time of the day (based on my experience :P, but it could be due to the fact that there is ongoing promotion now).
* I suggest that you drop your clips on those items which need pre-ordering first as it would take some time for the items to be ready and served in front of you. Then you can go for some ready-to-take food. :P

Some other food reviews:
http://masak-masak.blogspot.com/2006/02/jogoya-starhill-gallery-kl.html
http://kampungboycitygal.blogspot.com/2006/03/jogoya-starhill-gallery_10.html
http://pasankia.blogspot.com/2006/03/jogoya-kuala-lumpur-flagship-store.html

Address :
Jogoya
T3, Relish Floor
Starhill Gallery
181, Jalan Bukit Bintang
55100 Kuala Lumpur

Contact Number :
03 - 2142 1268

The prices for the buffet are:

Buffet Lunch - RM78++
11:30am - 1.40pm (weekdays) 11.00am - 2.00pm (weekends)
Buffet Late Lunch - RM68++
1:40pm - 4.20pm (weekdays)2.00pm - 4.20pm
Buffet Dinner - RM88++
5:00pm - 9.30pm (weekdays)5.00pm - 9.30pm
Buffet Supper - RM78++
9:30pm - 1.00am (weekdays)9.40pm - 1.00am (weekends)

Hu Xu Shen Grilled Fish (Serdang)

If you are a fish lover, you shouldn't miss this!

This restaurant is not obvious from the main road of the Serdang town. However, we passed this restaurant by accident on our way to other restaurants. Each time we passed by, we noticed that there are a lot of patrons enjoying their dinner inside. Thus, one day, we decided to check it out and the first time we tried it, we fell in love with it.

Take a look at the picture of the specialty of this restaurant first : Salt-Grilled Fish. Overall, the fish is very fresh, we went there at least 3 times already and it never fail our expectations. Being salt-grilled, the fish has a light taste of salt and the texture of the fish is very smooth and fresh. The fish is not over-grilled and so the flesh is still juicy.

The dish is not complete without the special sauce prepared by the restaurant. Its ingredients consist of light soy sauce, finely-chopped garlic, finely-chopped chilli and maybe some other ingredients. The first time I tasted it, it was a little salty to my liking. However, fulfill your appetite by dipping the fish into the sauce before eating and it would be heaven! The specially-made sauce would stimulate your taste bud and introduce additional savour to the fish!

The fish has substantial amount of salt on its skin. Thus, before serving, it is served with the skin removed from its flesh. Another interesting fact dining in that restaurant is, when you have finished eating the upper side of the fish, the waiters and waitresses would turn it over for you. Similarly, the skin is removed, and the bones of the fish are actually removed as well. Cool service~ Normally, they would do that automatically when they notice that the patrons have finished one side of the fish. If they don't, which could be due to the heavy flow of customers, you could request them to do so.

And now, the price? We ordered the salted-grilled fish (big serving), Chinese omelette, vegetables, white rice and Chinese tea, the whole meal cost four of us RM 55.50 which is quite reasonable for what a restaurant in Kuala Lumpur could offer you, especially with a fish as part of the meal!

Address :
鬍鬚伸小食店
No. 249-B,
Jalan 2，Kawasan 6，
43300 Seri Kembangan，Selangor.

Contact Number :
016-2888089

Business Hours :
5.30pm～12.30pm；5.30pm～1.30am(Saturday)；Off on Mondays

Pricing :
Fish at RM 20 per kg. The restaurant is not really located in an isolated place, but it is somehow a little bit hidden from the main road. Anyway, today I would like to introduce the spicy soup from Serdang to all of you.

That place is quite famous with its spicy soup and stewed chicken in Chinese wine I think as the place has quite an amount of eaters the time we visited it. The spicy soup is actually heavily "pepper-ed" soup with various pork intestines and organs. The soup I wouldn't say is the spicy as in from the curry, but it seems overwhelmingly warming up my stomach. If it is a cold rainy day, it would have been a very right choice to have the warm spicy soup go through your throat and warming up your whole body.

As for the stewed chicken in Chinese wine, the smell of this dish is very nice, credit to the Chinese wine. The Chinese wine used is Huadiao Jiu (花雕酒). Taste-wise, it has rich flavour of Chinese wine and black soya sauce.

Huadiao jiu (花雕酒; pinyin: huādiāo jiǔ; lit. "flowery carving wine"), also known as nu'er hong (女儿红; pinyin: nǚ'ér hóng, lit. "daughter red"): a variety of huangjiu that originates from Shaoxing, in the eastern coastal province of Zhejiang. It is made of glutinous rice and wheat.
(Extracted from : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huangjiu)

Another dish I want to introduce is the vegetables (油菜). This is so far the most crunchy vegetables that I have tasted. Even though it's cooked, but the crunchiness still remains. We all agreed that this vegetables is cooked perfectly. It's not very oily and it's crunchy! By the way, is crunchy a right word? :P

Spicy Soup

Spicy Soup

Vegetables

Stewed Chicken in Chinese Wine

Ye Ren Bak Kut Teh (Serdang)

Bak Kut Teh is a Chinese soup popularly served in Malaysia, Singapore and also cities of neighbouring countries like Batam of Indonesia and Hat Yai of Thailand. The name literally translates as "pork bone tea", and at its simplest consists of meaty pork ribs in a complex broth of herbs and spices (including star anise, cinnamon, cloves, dang gui and garlic), boiled together with pork bones for hours. However, additional ingredients may include offal, varieties of mushroom, lettuce, and pieces of dried tofu. Light and dark soy sauce are also added to the soup during cooking, with varying amounts depending on the variant.
(Extracted from : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bak_kut_teh)

This is a pretty famous retaurant serving Bak Kut Teh in the town of Serdang. This place is always full of people especially weekend, no matter lunch time or dinner time. Thus, if you would like to have a taste of the Bak Kut Teh, better be early! Otherwise, you could have your dinner with some dishes instead.

The Bak Kut Teh soup, though is a little bit salty to me sometimes, is considered above average to me. It is worth a try indeed, at least to find out why the restaurant is a crowd-puller! Anyway, there are quite an amount customers who go there for their dishes, but it might be that they are too late for the fast-selling-out Bak Kut Teh, like us too? :P

Bak Kut Teh

Bak Kut Teh

Vegetables

Mapo Tofu
Mapo doufu (Mapo tofu) (Chinese: 麻婆豆腐; pinyin: Mápó dòufu) is a popular Chinese dish from the Szechuan (Sichuan) province. This is a restaurant we came across in search for original Old Town Coffee Shop. I still don't know if this restaurant - Nam Heong Restaurant is the original one or not, maybe those who know can tell me. :P

Personally, I think that the puff pastry's skin is pretty crispy. As for the custard filling, it tasted average to me (from my countable experiences of treats to egg tarts :P).

Egg Tarts are a kind of pastry that is popular in Hong Kong, Macau, surrounding areas in southern China and overseas Chinese communities. It consists of a flaky outer crust, with a middle filled with egg custard, which is then baked. It is related to the English-style custard tart, a pastry commonly enjoyed in the British Isles, Australia, and New Zealand.
